It was a pleasure to sit down with Kirk last week and learn more about his journey – enjoy!
Full name: Kirk Brierley
Education: Honours Bachelor of Arts, University of Toronto. Certificate in Public Relations, Humber College
Current Position: Professor, School of Fashion, Cosmetics Techniques and Management
Bio: A highly motivated self-starter, with excellent communication skills and strong organizational abilities, Kirk has been involved with Seneca as a Program Advisory Committee member and we were delighted that we could bring him on board to teach our students Product Knowledge this past semester. Kirk’s years of experience and knowledge in the industry combined with his many insights will be a tremendous asset to the program, his colleagues, and most importantly our students. His positive demeanour, creativity and ability to “nimbly think on his feet” as he states, has enabled him to respond quickly to change while still maintaining the integrity of the message.
How long have you been teaching at Seneca? Since September 2017
What do you enjoy most about teaching? Enabling students to reach their full potential and help guide them at a time in their lives when the possibilities are endless but difficult to see.
What is your teaching style/philosophy? As much as possible, follow this quote that I uncovered recently: “The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see.” In other words, let students discover and uncover, without being spoon fed!
Would you like to tell us about an innovative teaching method that you are using or have used in your class? This isn’t particularly innovative per se, but knowing that anytime you are a student, you only retain a small fraction of what is being presented, mix up the delivery as much as possible. Utilize power point, videos, Q and A, group learning, presenting and various activities to avoid tuning out.
If so, what inspired you to include these teaching methods in your classes? Having been a student myself as you continuously learn, I know that the best way to retention is to be challenged. Also, we, as Teachers, are up against a lot of distraction in life!
What advice do you have for students in your program? Utilize the resources you have in your Professors. More than anywhere, the college learning experience provides students with teachers who have a wealth of practical experience and are eager to share it.
Do you have any other thoughts or memories you would like to share? When I think back to my early years entering the job market, filled with uncertainty and doubt, having the confidence of practical skills to bring to the table provides benefits that are beyond measure. Also, never stop learning! There is always something new to discover.
