Current Position: Full-time Professor in the School of Fashion

Bio: Lorrisa is an energetic and accomplished educator with over 14 years experience developing, preparing and delivering courses in retail merchandising, fashion retailing, and marketing in an effective and engaging learning environment. Over 24 years of fashion retail industry leadership experience with a focus on merchandise management and product development. Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage complex projects and coordinate activities under tight timelines. Superior interpersonal and communication skills. Known for relationship development, team collaboration, and networking. Strength in merchandise financial planning, assortment building, data analysis, process implementation, and resource management.

What advice do you have for students in your program?

Take advantage of your time in the program at Seneca by engaging with your peers and professors and ask lots of questions about the industry. Your professors have unique and valuable industry knowledge and insights; many have worked in the industry for many years and have tons of information and stories to share. This is your time to practice, experiment with ideas, and take risks!

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

My favourite part of teaching is engaging with the students. I enjoy creating lessons where students are actively engaged in the course topics through individual and group activities. Building relationships with students are really important to me. I am genuinely interested in their success at school and in their future careers in the fashion business industry. I strive to provide students with practical, hands-on industry knowledge to prepare them for a successful career path.

What is your teaching style/philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is centered on delivering students a rich, dynamic learning environment, focused on an active learning approach. Through various assignments, projects, in-class or online activities and assessments, students evaluate and solve problems, provide recommendations, develop practical industry-related skills, and develop a professional business acumen for their future career.

Would you like to tell us about an innovative teaching method that you are using or have used in your class?

I have used the case study method to learning in many of my classes. While it is not a new teaching method, I have found it to be very effective for creating an environment where students can engage with each other, have open dialogue and discussion, and develop interesting and creative solutions to problems. My role in the case method process is to facilitate discussion amongst students in the classroom. There is not one right answer in this approach to teaching and learning; it is a process of discovering viable alternatives, recommendations, and action plans in an active learning setting.

If so, what inspired you to include these teaching methods in your classes?

I was inspired to use the case method to learning through my own experience as a student while completing my MBA. I modified the method to a “mini-case” format and created a simple case study framework that students at any level could use to successfully complete a case study.

How long have you been teaching at Seneca? I started at Seneca in the Fall of 2017 as a part-time Professor teaching Retail Marketing to first-year students. In January of 2018, I became a full-time professor in the Fashion Business/ Fashion
Business Management programs.

Note: I began teaching part-time at Ryerson Ted Rogers School of Retail Management fourteen years ago while working full-time in the fashion retail industry. I taught a variety of courses including a third-year retail buying and planning course, which I taught in the classroom and well as online in the distance education program.

Do you have any other thoughts or memories you would like to share?

My energy in the classroom and my passion for teaching comes from my students and their drive for learning and desire to excel in their academic and future career in the fashion industry. I’m excited to share my knowledge and fashion business experiences with them!
